While I have respected Macworld's work in general for many years now, their testing methodology for this recent battery life test comes across as something only an Apple fanboy would do to prove Apple's critics wrong.Ībout Making Comments on our Site: Patently Apple reserves the right to post, dismiss or edit any comments. The test by Tom's Guide didn't tinker with any particular smartphone or lower brightness on the Huawei phone to make the battery seem better than the iPhone XS Max. It's a little disappointing to see Macworld testing being tampered with for battery life the day after Tom's Guide to make it look as though the battery for the new iPhones is better than reported, when we now see that the test appears to have been fixed to make it look better. Yet for Macworld's battery life testing, they dramatically lowered the display brightness calibrated at 200 nits.īy Macworld tinkering with the display and camera settings, magically the iPhone XS Max showed better battery life when compared to Tom Guide's fair across the board real-world testing. Secondly, Displaymate noted that the iPhone XS Max produces an impressively bright 725 nits. Macworld also toyed with turning off auto-brightness and disabled TrueTone. Everyone uses their phone differently and in different conditions, so it's all but impossible for a battery benchmark test to tell you what your everyday experience will be." Battery drain is more than just a function of processor efficiency-the brightness and efficiency of the display plays a major factor, as does wireless networking, RAM, and a host of other factors. Macworld made it known that "It's difficult to get a realistic picture of battery life on a smartphone. In contrast Macworld only tested the iPhone battery life to other iPhones and not competing smartphones. In other words, this is as close to ideal conditions as we can get while keeping everything repeatable." Tom's Guide stated that "To ensure consistency, we run all of our phone battery tests on T-Mobile's network, and we ensure that the phones have full signal strength by using a signal booster called the T-Mobile 4G LTE CellSpot. Tom's Guide used a completely different testing methodology than the Macworld test on battery life. The timing of the Macworld test is most interesting considering that it was posted after Tom's Guide published its finding about the iPhone XS and XS Max battery being poor in contrast with other competing smartphones. You could check out the Macworld report here to view the other test results. Other tests that Macworld shows iPhone XS / XS Max results for includes benchmarks using AnTuTu v7 and 3D graphics performance using 3DMark. Interestingly to note that multi-core apps that don't need a GPU supporting Apple's Metal actually ran better on the the iPhone XS than the XS Max. Macworld published a report today that shows the iPhone XS Max performance in contrast to the 2017 iPhone X, and as expected, the new iPhone XS Max was shown to be much higher, especially with apps that could take advantage of Apple's GPU Metal. ![]()
